Kate Garrison has the perfect marriage, the perfect daughter, the perfect life...until one rainy night, on a deserted stretch of highway, where it's all brutally taken away from her. Her family's car plummets into the dark, murky depths of the river. When she recovers from the accident, she realizes she is being held at the hands of a greed driven maniac. A greed driven maniac who wants money she knows nothing about. Her will to live is shattered when she learns that her husband and daughter did not survive the accident...or didn't they? For three years, surrounded by lies and betrayal, Kate is forced to dig deep inside herself for the will to go on. With the help of an unlikely ally, she finally escapes. In search of the truth, she finds her way back home. She quickly realizes that life has gone on for the husband and daughter who were left behind that dark night, in depths of that seemingly endless river.
Luke Garrison has spent three years mourning the wife who supposedly drowned the night he nearly lost his own life. He's been raising their daughter alone and dealing with deeply rooted grief ever since then. But when Kate suddenly reappears, he's not sure what to think. The once vibrant woman he married has been beaten down into a person he barely recognizes. Her story of that stormy night and the past three years is almost too unbelievable to fathom. Luke quickly realizes she didn't leave him on her own, she was taken from him. And the maniac who took her is still on her tail. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants...including murder.

"It was an odd turn of events that had brought her to this place— this godforsaken hole in the wall. How much time had gone by since she had arrived here, she couldn’t be sure. It seemed like an eternity. Her dreams, her hopes, all of her aspirations, were gone. They had died a cold and bitter death, in a dark abyss she still had nightmares about often."Root of All Evil is a book I had downloaded at some point for free and found on my kindle over the week-end. Once I read the blurb, I was totally hooked and couldn’t believe I had this sitting on my Kindle for months and hadn’t read it. A back from the dead story line where the heroine has been held captive by the bad guys for years while her husband struggles to move on from his one true love? EEK! If that blurb has you rolling your eyes at the clicheness of the story, this probably isn’t the book for you! For me, I could hardly wait to start it!
I think the blurb does an excellent job of summing up the plot so I’m not going to go over it again. The story opens with the events surrounding an accident that happens where both characters believe the other has passed away. The story then fast forwards three years later and the events that take place when Kate is given her freedom.
The love that Luke has for the wife he believes dead, and the love that Kate has for Luke, made this a love story that was destined to overcome all for me. Luke struggles to move on even with a lot of family pressure to let go of the past and find a new partner.
"Katie Blue was still very much alive in his heart. Hell, in spite of his reasoning that he needed to move on, he couldn’t let go of her."
And Kate basically gives up on life and accepts her captivity, believing she has lost it all.
"After all, she had nothing. Nobody. The only two people who had ever mattered to her were dead. Gone. For good."
The build-up to when Kate and Luke come face to face was a killer for me. I stayed up late into the night (even though I had a cold!) because I had to see what happened when these two came face to face. I don’t want to give anything else away but will say I was not disappointed!
There was a lot I really liked about this book. I loved the overall story line. I really liked the heroine. It was well well-written. The love between Luke and Kate was believable. The pacing of the book was really well done too. You don’t have to dig through much to get to the heart of the story. There’s not a ton of background to wade through. As soon as I started reading, I was hooked and stayed interested the whole way through.
Honestly, the first half of Root of All Evil could have been a five start read just based on how much I liked the story and the build-up. Unfortunately, the second half of the book was not as strong. In the second half, there are several decisions that are made that qualified both characters as TSTL. As a wealthy man, Luke has unlimited resources to ensure that this family remains safe when faced with danger. Alarm systems, private security, moving the family, locking windows, staying inside, etc. All the precautions that were not taken really took away from the overall story for me. There were some missing details as well, not a lot of mention about the press, etc. I also thought that while the reunion between the two character is emotional, I would have liked to have seen a little more depth of emotion between Luke and Kate as they reconnected. The overall love they shared was evident but it could have been more. There was an intensity in the first half of the book that I thought was missing in the second.
All that being said, Root of All Evil still was a solid four star read for me and I’m glad I finally read it. I’m surprised the book has so few reviews and ratings on Goodreads or Amazon and think that’s a result of poor marketing by the author or publisher instead of a reflection on the quality of the book itself. I couldn’t help but think of Elizabeth Naughton’s book, Wait for Me, while I read Root of All Evil. For readers that enjoyed that book or just like fast-paced, slightly over the top romantic suspense stories, I’d recommend checking this one out. For readers like me that can't pass up a back from the dead story line, Root of All Evil is a MUST READ.
I did notice that the author has several more romantic suspense books released that seem like they would be a good fit for me. Most of her books are available to borrow for free if you’re an Amazon Prime member which is a plus, because I am! I also searched my kindle and found that I had another book by this author I have not read yet, After the Rain. If you frequently download freebies, you may want to check to see if you have anything from this author as well. I definitely plan on reading more from Jennifer Hayden in the future!

another great reading by jennifer hayden. the story keeps you spell bound from start to finish. i have thoroughly enjoyed reading her books.
I loved the book. The story kept moving along. I had a hard time putting it down.
This is one of the few books that I've read twice. The story is both sad and heartwarming. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. It has a lot of suspense and twists that keeps one engaged.
Good Read! Recommend it for all suspense readers! Held my interest until the end. Why not try the sample as I think you will like it and want to purchase the book as it is a hold your interest type book.
I read part of this and ended up returning it after a third of the book. Just too unrealistic and very annoying. Kate's behavior, the over reaction of the police to the "attempted" kidnapping, the persistence of the bad guy.. I've enjoyed some of Ms Haydens other books. Guess we all have an off time.
